SSPN — The Malaysian Education Savings Account With a 28% Effective Return

If you have children and you pay income tax in Malaysia, there is a government-backed savings account offering what is arguably the highest guaranteed return of any readily available instrument: a tax relief effective return of up to 28%, at zero risk, backed by a statutory government body.

Most parents either do not know SSPN exists, or assume it is too complicated. It is neither.

What Is SSPN?

SSPN — Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional — is a national education savings scheme administered by PTPTN (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional). You open an account for your child, deposit money, earn annual dividends, and the funds are withdrawn when your child enrolls in higher education.

Where Does the 28% Come From?

LHDN allows you to claim up to RM8,000 per year in tax relief for net deposits into your child’s SSPN account. Net deposits means total deposits minus any withdrawals in the same tax year.

The effective return from the tax saving depends on your marginal tax bracket. At a 19% marginal rate, an RM8,000 deposit saves you RM1,520 in tax — a 19% return the moment the money goes in, before dividends. At higher brackets, the effective return is correspondingly higher. The 28% figure represents the approximate return at the top applicable marginal rates.

Important: the actual effective return for you depends on your specific tax bracket and chargeable income. Consult hasil.gov.my or a licensed tax advisor for your personal figure.
